The answer is YES. I still have my Gallby.

Since the last post, I only had one small incident… it was a night where I felt a very small cramp which reminded me of the lingering pain after a gallbladder attack. It was probably just a muscle problem. It was gone the next day. But that was the only time in all of these years I ever really looked back.

I never really think about my gallbladder anymore. It simply never occurs to me. I kind of wish it did, because I eat terribly again without the immediate consequence. Pizza, burgers, anything. Gallby don’t seem to care.

I’m so glad I kept this blog, and glad that so many find it when they are struggling. Gallbladder attacks are the worst and I still have felt nothing yet to rival the pain of it.

Celebrate With A Gallstone Banana Spit

One of the seemingly most difficult things about the gallbladder is diet is the total elimination of refined sugar. Refined sugar is bad. You don’t need it. Sadly, I am a sugar junkie and absolutely love sweets of all kinds.

I thought the experience of giving up sugar would be harder than it actually is. The truth is, after a few weeks, I am finding that my tastes are recalibrating. Fruits are sweet enough. I’m avoiding all refined sugar, honey, molasses, “organic cane sugar” (deceptive health food store lingo for refined sugar), maple syrup, everything. Instead, I’m eating tons of fresh fruit and loving it.

For fun, I tried some vegan tricks last night for a treat. This is a banana split made of nothing but fruit and nuts. It is unbelievably tasty! Now, this is certainly loaded with natural sugar from the fruit and fat from the nuts, but it is good for the body. Just make sure to share and not each to much.

Banana Ice Cream

Take 4 bananas and blend them in a blender until they are totally smooth. Put them in a container and freeze for an hour. Done! Banana Ice Cream.

Cashew Whipped Cream

While said bananas are freezing, put 1/2 cup of raw (unroasted, unsalted) cashews and 1/2 cup of dates (remove pits) in a blender. Add a cup of water. Let them site for 10 mins to soften, then blend, pulse, pummel with the blender until nice and creamy. Done! Vegan whipped cream.


Cut up a handful of fresh strawberries and toast a handful of walnuts. Chop the walnuts.


Put the frozen banana ice cream in a dish, top with strawberries and toasted walnuts, add a dollop of cashew whipped cream.

It’s a great mix of fruity and nutty flavors. An excellent exercise for mindful eating.

Chamomile And Lemon for Your Gallbladder (and liver)


While researching things that can help the gallbladder and liver, two things keep popping over and over again. Chamomile Tea and Lemon Juice. Both are seemingly harmless enough and the anecdotes suggest that both are helpful in restoring your liver, and digestion in general, to good health. Seems simple enough and worth trying.

One problem for me is that I really don’t like the taste of Chamomile Tea. In my quest to see what I could do about that, I was lucky enough to find a local herbalist with pure, fresh, dried Chamomile flowers. It is a whole different experience. I strongly suggest you put the Celestial Seasonings to the side and go look for the good stuff. Fantastic.

Best of all, you can combine these to therapies into one simple drink. It seems both are beneficial as a starter and as a nightcap. So I brew a pot of fresh chamomile tea at night and pour a hot cup. I squeeze 1/2 of a fresh lemon into it and drink before bed. I save the rest of the pot for the morning. When I wake up, I pour the cool chamomile into a glass and add the other 1/2 of the lemon (squeeze it in). I drink it first thing in the morning. It’s a great time to take your Disodium Phosphate too.

Lemon Juice is nicely stimulating, particularly for the digestion. I am finding it is great before breakfast, but makes me a little more peckish at night than usual. Overall though, it is soothing and good for you. A fantastic source of Vitamin C.

Like Water for Gallstones

It’s as important to watch what you drink as it is to watch what you eat. We all require a tremendous amount of water each day and if you have a gallstones, it is a must. I’m 5′ 10″/155 lbs, so I’m supposed to drink about 85 ounces of water a day. 85 ounces! Measure out that amount sometime and see just how much it is.

I’m generally a thirsty fellow and do drink lots of water. But now I’m actually counting and it is easy to miss the mark of 85 ounces. You really have to strategize and plan to get all those glasses of water in each day, especially because you don’t want to drink too close to meals (to aid digestion).

One initial problem I had was being diagnosed with an ulcer and put on prilosec. The prilosec really, really, slowed my digestion so I was careful not to drink water within an hour before or after eating so I would not dilute the little amount stomach acid I had left. This was exactly the wrong thing to do. Gallstones need more water not less.

To make the most of a more calculated and focused consumption of all that water, I’ve come up with a few tricks.

The first thing to do is get yourself a good glass that you can reuse. That way, you don’t have wash 8 different glasses every night. Paint your name on it if you want to so your family does not hijack what will become your favorite glass. to Choose one that is a good, known measurement. I’m lucky enough to have an original POM Wonderful glass/bottle. It is a great, slim, 12 glass. Sadly, POM stopped making them and has replaced them with plastic.

The next thing to do is mix them up with some elixirs. Small additions to your glasses that will help you get down a few things known to be good for gallstone diets:

  • Add 2 ounces of fruit juice (organic apple or grape) to a 10 ounce glass of water.
  • Add a teaspoon or 2 of Apple Cider Vinegar (The good stuff, BRAGGS)
  • Add 2 ounces of Aloe Vera Juice (great for digestion, like the Flax Seed Tea)
  • Add a few ounces of fresh squeezed lemon

All of these things are fantastic for gallstone healing and general digestive health. Your water consumption is a good opportunity to get them down consistently throughout the day.

Magic Beet Salad for Gallstone Pain



One strategy for determining which nuggets of Internet-gallbladder-advice might work is weighing the sheer volume of recommendations and the relative harmlessness of the advice.

It seems clear that BEETS are a beloved food of the liver and gallbladder. Beets are generally tasty, relatively harmless, and most of us don’t eat them enough anyway.

This simple, humble, beet salad is easy to make, easy to eat, and causes gallby no distress:

  • Grate 1 whole organic beet into a bowl
  • Add a quarter cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • Add two table spoons of flaxseed oil

Gallbladder snack. Anyone can eat this for good health. You can nibble on it all day long as an important in between meal snack. Alternate this with  cucumbers during snack times and you’ll be on the right track.

Getting Your Protein On A Gallstone Diet

One of the really difficult things about gallstone and gallbladder supportive diets are that all of your average, easy protein sources are considered high risk. Vegetarians and vegans are probably used to this, but for the rest of us, it can be a real struggle. There are few healthy diets in the world that don’t suggest cutting make on fatty red meats, but many gallbladder diets rule out all fowl including chicken and turkey. Yikes! With dairy excluded as well, and EGGS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST OF ATTACK INDUCING FOODS it gets even more difficult.

To make sure I have my bases covered I’ve invested in a jar of rice-based protein. There are lots of these beverages to choose from in healthfood stores, but most are loaded with stuff including sugars that should be avoided. I’ve selected this one from NutraBiotics because of its simplicity. It’s just rice protein and a little natural vanilla flavor. No bells and whistles.

You simply mix this stuff in a glass of water. It’s watery for sure… it lacks the thickeners in other “protein shake” products ( and that’s a good thing)

It is safe and agreeable and a good backup source of protein. I drink it midday or afternoon and it causes no effect for me on the gallbladder.
